Mortuary Science: Removal Technician Application

Requirements for Registration

To meet the requirements for registration, the applicant must:

  • Complete in-person or live, real-time interactive media education training approved by the Iowa Board of Mortuary Science; 

  • Be employed at an Iowa-licensed funeral establishment; and

  • Be supervised by an Iowa-licensed funeral director.

Note: Removal technicians must keep documentation of successful completion of board-approved training, and provide it upon request.

Registration & Renewal

A removal technician registration is valid for five years from the date of issuance. You may renew your registration within 60 days of expiration.


Application SubmissionComplete the following application and submit to the Iowa Board of Mortuary Science.  The application fee is $50 and may be paid by check or money order. Important:The fee is nonrefundable.

Required Training

A removal technician must complete an in-person or live, real-time interactive media education training program that is approved by the board of mortuary science and provides education and training on the following:

  • Requirements of the Federal Trade Commission Funeral Rule as defined in rule IAC 645—100.1(156);

  • Requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Act relevant to the removal technician’s duties;

  • Iowa laws and rules relevant to removal technicians; and

  • Pertinent equipment.

Important: It is the responsibility of the removal technician to maintain documentation of successful completion of the education training program.

Employment Information

Supervising Licensed Funeral Director

Removal technicians must work under the direct supervision of an Iowa-licensed funeral director. To qualify as a supervising licensee, the funeral director must meet the following requirements:

  • Has a minimum of five (5) years of practice;

  • Has not had formal disciplinary action taken against the license by the Board of Mortuary Science within the past five (5) years; and

  • Is affiliated with a funeral establishment that has not been subject to discipline within the past five (5) years.

The supervising licensee:

  • Must be physically present and supervise the removal techinician's first five (5) removals;

  • May not supervise more than two (2) removal techinicians; and

  • Will not have more than four (4) registered removal technicians at the same funeral establishment, or any establishment owned, operated or affiliated with that funeral establishment.

Changes in Employment or SupervisionNote: Within 30 days of any changes to the registrant's supervisor or funeral establishment, the registrant must notify the Board of Mortuary Science in writing.

In the memo, please include the name of the applicant to ensure that the fees are applied to the correct application.


Fee WaiverYou may be eligible to receive a fee waiver of your initial license application if your household income does not exceed 200% of the federal poverty guideline.

Effective January 1, 2021, individuals whose household adjusted gross income does not exceed 200% of the annual federal poverty level guideline may request a waiver for application fees.

  • Fees include license application and criminal background check fees. 

  • Fees do not include exam fees paid to testing centers. 

  • Fee waiver applies only to first time license applicants in the state.

  • Re-exams, renewals and reactivations do not qualify.

Note: If you request a fee waiver, you will be asked to provide a copy of your most recent federal tax return as evidence of qualification for the waiver.
